From the industrial town of Sauda at the head of the Saudafjord, National Road 520 winds its way up along the river Storelva to the Allmannajuvet ravine. This is where we find one of the most recent National Tourist Route projects: Peter Zumthor’s memorial to the abandoned zinc mines in the ravine. In the press release issued by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration in connection with the opening of the visitor attraction on 8 September of last year, the project is described as a monument to the mining operation and the miners’ life of hardship in the late 1800s.
